Flaxseed Pancakes

For the last two weeks, we've been adding flaxseed to our food. It's nice to know that even if we indulge a bit, there's something good in there. We started with oatmeal and homemade bread then, hubby requested adding it to our usual weekend pancakes and after that, we never want our pancakes any other way. The nutty smell of flaxseed+vanilla (from the pancake mix) was intoxicating. I was in pancake heaven while cooking.

I know the deep fried pork sausage, cream cheese & mango jam is a bit on the sinful side but, there's no denying they taste good together.Worth every bite.

For the recipe, I just mixed 3 Tbsp ground brown flaxseed into store-bought pancake mix, and that's it.

2 reasons why I blog and how Grammarly helped me

Seven years ago, I started blogging out of boredom from being a stay-at-home wife. I need diversion and also to polish my writing skills. I tend to interchange and misspell words, and I'm having a hard time deciding when is the right time to use punctuations. I'm a grammar mess, and that's not a good thing.

How can I convey my emotion into words if I can't even construct a proper sentence? The message I want to express may be taken differently. I need to do something to improve. Luckily, a dear friend of mine recommended Grammarly. I immediately tried their service, and I was blown away! (no exaggeration there) I found the perfect partner to help me improve my skills.

Let me share a few screenshots from my premium account*. After my Initial log-in, I was surprised to see how simple, straight forward, and basic the dashboard looks. As I mention here, I love Clean, uncluttered interface. It makes any task easy and stress-free. In other word, It's user-friendly.

My Grammarly is where my files are. It automatically labels the edited files and alerted me for the remaining errors.

Subscription can be paid quickly

I have the option to access the web-based application or I can download it, as an add-in to my Microsoft® Word™ and Outlook®.

I can create New Document by New, Paste (copy/cut) and Upload (document)

Let's look at my healthy breakfast post. I copy+paste, and it automatically review & detect the errors and plagiarism I committed.

here's the detailed report of my mistakes that I have the option to download if I want.

When I clicked the red & green highlights, the explanation popped-out.

I have the option to ignore or click more for further explanations.

It detects wordiness, and this is my favorite feature. It challenges me to change and improve my sentence.

Regarding the plagiarism, I don't copy text from any website. but, it detected similar & exact words used from another website and tag it as unoriginal text. Another brilliant feature if you ask me.

All-in-all, I enjoyed the service of Grammarly and I highly recommend. It did help me with my writing. I currently checking my old post for errors.

note: I was given a free Grammarly premium service in exchange for a review. Regardless, all opinions are 100% my own. This post contains affiliate links.

One Little Word 2015: IGNORE

My One Little Word for 2015 is IGNORE

The word may sound cynical at first, but if you take a minute to digest what the word mean, you will realize why I choose it. It's not all about ignoring someone (as my hubby think first when I told him), but my overall attitude towards things or situation I'm in.

Ignore procrastination and START writing down my blog & shop goals and achieving it on time. I'm using CuttyCal sync with my Google Calendar. This year I want to produce more quality kits/digital products; Sell more. I want my small business to move up and offer additional items.

Ignore negative vibes and people who created it and FOCUS on the positive aspect of my life. Being more grateful for the blessings I received. I want to control the type of energy I let into my life.

Ignore cowardice and try to be BRAVE on trying new things. Like, riding a plane to visit a family or friend. Baby steps.

Ignore more unhealthy food and CONTINUE eating healthy alternatives. I still can't believe that my hubby will love eating cereals with flaxseed.

This year, I WANT to be better, more productive, and more adventurous. Cheers to 2015! I CAN DO IT!

One Little Word® is a concept created by Ali Edwards.

Beauty Haul

Just in case, you missed my other haul posts; you can check it here and here. I'm beginning to love this sharing of products we like to consume on a regular basis. A glimpse of our private lives by the products were using. A mini review & recommendation from me to you.

Kris Aquino EDT OK first of all, I'm not a fan of the celebrity whose EDT name came from. That's why, my hubby always tease me for buying her product. Well, I may not like her, but I love this EDT. It doesn't trigger my skin allergies, and it blends well with my body chemistry. It's my signature scent. There are few encounters from the past, from a total strangers, telling me how they love my scent. Most of the time, I received a blank stare when I mention the name and a follow-up questions where do I buy and how much it cost. It seems that few people know this EDT exist. If you love oriental notes, you, will love this.

To compliment Kris Aquino EDT, I slather my skin with Dreamy Berry Burst body lotion. Two years ago, I received this as a gift and from that day till now, I use it, and I'm not ashamed to share that I did a bit of hoarding last December.

I also received Herb Day 365 Acerola Cleansing Foam as a gift, and I never thought that our (me & hubby) skin will love it. It cleanses and brighten our faces.Too bad, when we dropped by their Glorietta branch, The Acerola was not available so, I decided to buy their Mung Beans Cleansing Foam & Lemon Cleansing Foam (not in the picture) and we still got the same result.

Around Here

It's been busy for us, and we look forward to a long public holiday (Jan.15-19) Due to the Papal visit this week. Hubby & I will do our bi-monthly grocery shopping together and spend the rest of the week at home watching cable shows/series:

  • In Search Of Aliens
  • Ancient Aliens
  • The Pope From The End Of The World (will also watch live updates of itinerary)
  • America's Book Of Secrets
  • 10 Things You Don't Know About
  • 48 Hours Mystery
  • The First 48
  • Evil Twins
  • Obsession: Dark Desires
  • Campus Nightmares
  • I Didn't Do It
  • Killer Kids
  • Deadly Wives
  • FBI: Criminal Pursuit
  • The Will: Family Secrets Revealed S1

While watching, I'm going to multi-task and follow the walkthrough video lessons of Mastering Foundation Crochet Stitches (w/ Marty Miller) to refresh my knowledge & skills in crocheting. It's been years since my last project. I will also finish my blog posts on how I earned extra cash using Affiliate Programs, How Grammarly makes my writing & blogging life easy breezy, My Christmas homeware & beauty haul, and Oil pulling.

In between will do tons of sleeping, eating and playing with our dogs who happens to stop from alternately throwing up, after I stop adding extra water to soften their dry dog food. According to this article, dogs tend to sweat less during the cold season, and if they still taking the same amount of water they drink in the summer, this can cause vomiting. I'm glad information like this, is easily available online. It saves us time and money from unnecessary vet visit.

Fruit Salad

Fruit salad is a traditional party food dessert here in the Philippines. The usual ingredients: canned fruit cocktail, condensed milk and Nestle cream. There's nothing simpler than this dessert because you only need a canned opener, a bowl, and a spoon to mix them all together. Every Filipino mom/wife/Aunt/grandmother have their version of this easy dessert. In my case, I don't. This dessert is too sweet for my taste plus I prefer to have my fruits fresh rather than canned. I omitted the essential ingredients and turned this fruit salad into something else. The strawberry-calamansi dressing surprisingly made this salad interesting.

Ingredients:
Ham Lyoner, sliced into strips
Sweet Frisee Lettuce
Green Kiwi, sliced
Apple, chopped

For Strawberry-Calamansi Dressing:
Strawberry Jam
Calamansi Juice

Instructions:

Combine all dressing ingredients in a container then mix. Refrigerate. Soak lettuce in ice water for 10 or 15 minutes.Remove the lettuce from the water and dry it in a salad spinner. Mix Ham, fruits & lettuce in a bowl. Add the dressing by spoon fulls and toss to desired taste.

Hearty Breakfast

Starting a new habit can be overwhelming sometimes especially if it's something to do with your health. Last week, I started Oil pulling (details will be on my next blog post) and 2 Tbsp of ground Flaxseed for our breakfast. The hardest part is not getting use to the taste because it has a nutty flavor but grinding it manually using a mortar and pestle. I need to start a few seeds at a time because they go flying across the room, and I have dogs who loves to sniff around and eat whatever they see that I don't notice. By the time, I'm done with the grinding, the energy I got when I woke up was already gone, and that made me dream of a new food processor. I need to buy it soon because it might be the cause of us flaking from this healthy habit.

Flaxseed or linseed is considered a super food. A rich source of dietary fiber, fatty acid ALA or Omega 3, Magnesium, And Vitamin B. It was found to help lower cholesterol level, the risk of diabetes, cancer, and menopausal symptoms. You can check here the full report of nutritional value of Flaxseed.

If you ever include this in your morning breakfast, be sure to ground it first. The whole seeds will only pass through your body without being digested, and all the nutrients that you supposed to get, will be wasted.

Is eating out cheaper than cooking at home?

We used to eat out with friends and families but as we get older and wiser, we started inviting love ones at home for home cooked meals. I even baked cookies last December for gift giving and it saves us some extra money.

Eating out is a good thing. It saves time and physical work (dirty dishes). It's fast and immediately gratifying. My kind of thing when I'm too tired to even cook a decent meal at the end of a stressful day. A saving grace but it cost a lot and that's not a good thing.

Let's do the math and compare. A whole Chicken roast can cost around 500 pesos (12 dollars) good for 2-3 person in a restaurant. If I buy a whole Chicken in a wet market it will only cost me 150 pesos (3.50 dollars) and I can cook 2-3 Chicken recipes:
The chicken from the market is good for 2-3 types of dishes, not just one meal. Cooking at home is the clear winner here in terms of serving, cost per meal and nutrient values plus the fact that because it was home cooked, you are sure what's in your food.

The 52 Week Challenge 2015

How time flies. In a blink of an eye, 2015 is already here. This year we promised ourselves to be more proactive when it comes to achieving our goal which is to save 50,000.00 pesos or more at the end of the year. We're not getting any younger and saving for our retirement should be our main priority while we can. I believe that the 52 week money challenge is doable. We just need to double our discipline and resistance to unnecessary things (food, food and food) Yes, we sometimes get over the limit of our food budget and that's not a good thing.

Well, in fairness to us, that's the only thing we spend our money to. We are proud to share that we don't owe anyone a single cent, we don't have credit cards to pay for, and all our bills+house rent are paid monthly with no previous balance. We are actually given incentives for being a good payer. We felt that indulging in good food is worth the price until we realized last December that if we want to continue our lifestyle in the future, we need to change our financial strategy. Increasing our savings will be beneficial in the future. :) :) :)
